OVERVIEW

This large kitchen needed to accommodate a family of six that enjoys cooking together. The original island acted as a barrier between the kitchen work triangle and forced everyone into the same spot. This remodel addressed the clients' desire for as many work areas as possible, while the design incorporated their love of intricate wood carvings.

FUNCTIONALITY

The clients had already purchased their new appliances, so the new layout had to find a home for each of these, including space for a 48" range and 54" hood.

The cooktop had previously been in the island, but with the transition to a freestanding range and double oven, there was the opportunity to do more with the island and the wall space near the fridge.

The new island is more than just countertop space and storage. A second sink and a set of refrigerator drawers were added to create multiple prep areas. Three produce baskets next to the refrigerator drawers keep the counters clear of fruit baskets.

Small appliances, including juicer, toaster and coffee pot, were used every day, but the family didn't want these prominently displayed. A built-in coffee machine went in the spot previously held by the oven, while tucked away counter space between the fridge and coffee machine provided room for the juicer and toaster. These are conveniently located across from the island sink. Meanwhile, there is an appliance pantry with rollouts to store appliances used less frequently, while still being easily accessible.

By adding a garbage/recycling cabinet next to the dishwasher and wrapping the cabinets along the side wall, the clients no longer needed a freestanding trash and there was space to house the dog bowls in an open-shelved cabinet.

Because of the new range and hood sizes, upper cabinet space was limited on this wall. To provide additional upper cabinet space, the soffit was extended above the sink area, allowing cabinets to utilize that wall space as well. These upper cabinets are perfect for glassware, while a pegged dish drawer was placed in the island to store everyday dishes in close proximity to the dishwasher and kitchen table.

DESIGN

The clients’ love for hand-carved art was incorporated into the kitchen by spanning a carved valance above the main sink and the hood, along with two large carved turnings at the end of the island. The marbled granite was selected to complement both the rich wood tones used in the darker cabinetry along the walls and the lighter-colored island, as well as the new stone floor and backsplash.
